WELCOME TO COIL

Welcome to COIL is part of the Professional Development for COIL initiative offered by the International Education and Partnership Office of the Durban University of Technology. Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) has been in practice as a pedagogical method at DUT for a number of years, allowing further enhancement of internationalisation and decolonisation of the curriculum at DUT.

Space is limited to 25 participants. All participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Dr Lavern Samuels

Dr Samuels is the current Director of the International Education and Partnerships (IEP)  Directorate at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). He is the Senate Representative on the University Council and is the immediate past Chairperson of the DUT Institutional Forum. Dr Samuels is also the Vice-President  and Chair of the Directors Forum of the International Education Association of South Africa (IEASA). 

Dr. Moeti Kgware

Moeti is an International Education Specialist with a PhD in Management Sciences, an LLM degree as well as degrees in Environmental Health, Post-School Education and Human Resources Management. He is responsible for activities related to internationalisation of the curriculum at the Durban University of Technology. He was previously a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Health and Head of Department for Nursing, Child and Youth Care and Environmental Health programmes at the Durban University of Technology.

Ms Carol Newman

Ms Carol Newman currently holds the position of International Education Officer at the Durban University of Technology from February 2016 to present. She has spent the past 24 years working in the Higher Education Sector in various positions ranging from administrative to managerial. She holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology.

Ms Divinia Jithoo

Ms Divinia Jithoo is a Specialist in International Education at the International Education and Partnerships Office at the Durban University of Technology. Ms Jithoo has worked in higher  education Internationalisation since 2007 and has specialised in study abroad and exchange as well as international virtual engagement. Ms Jithoo is also a PH.D candidate at the University of Western Cape. Her research focus is leadership of cross-border research collaboration.

Penny Orton

Penny is currently working as a Collaborative Online International Education (COIL) Specialist in the Department of International Education & Partnerships at the Durban University of Technology. Penny is a specialist nurse educator who holds a PhD from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Philiswa Mncube

Philiswa Mncube (Ms) is an International Students Relations Officer at the Durban University of Technology, International Education and Partnerships Directorate. Previously, Philiswa worked as a (part-time) Lecturer in the Media, Language and Communications Department where she lectured Intercultural Studies and Translation Theory and Practice. She graduated with Bachelor of Technology in Language Practice from Durban University of Technology and is currently enrolled for Masters of Arts (MA) in IsiZulu: African Languages and Culture with the University of Zululand.

Phumza Sokhetye

Phumza Sokhetye holds a Master of Applied Arts degree in Fashion from the Faculty of Arts and Design at the Durban University of Technology in collaboration with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Phumza is now registered for a Doctor of Art and Design in Fashion at Tshwane University of Technology.

What can participants expect:

  • A background to COIL & Virtual Engagement at DUT
  • COIL as a pedagogy
  • An overview of the underpinning principles of the design of a COIL project

Learning outcomes:
On completion of the activities in Welcome to COIL you will be able to:

  • Recognise a range of different terms for virtual engagement initiatives.
  • Summarize the principles and characteristics of COIL as a pedagogy.
  • Differentiate between COIL & Virtual Engagement
  • Explain the stages in the design and implementation of a COIL project
    (including partnering)

Asynchronous:   1 ½ hours prior to session
Synchronous:     3 hour session
